Carved into a hillside on the southern outskirts of Madurai, the mandir is built as a cave sanctuary rather than a freestanding structure, with rock-cut halls that historians date to as early as the 8th century under the Pandya king Maravarman Sundara Pandiyan, making it one of the oldest of the six sites by documented construction. According to the mandir's founding legend, this is where Murugan married Deivayanai, daughter of Indra, gifted to him in gratitude after his decisive victory over the demon king Surapadman — so where other Arupadaiveedu sites commemorate Murugan the warrior, Thiruparankundram specifically commemorates Murugan the husband, the moment the god's martial triumph resolved into a marriage.
