Suryanar Kovil holds a distinction that makes it genuinely unique even among sacred sites: it is the only mandir in Tamil Nadu — arguably in India — with a separate, dedicated shrine for every single one of the nine Navagraha deities under one roof, rather than devotees having to travel between nine different mandirs across the Kumbakonam region to complete the full circuit. Built by the Chola king Kulottunga I in the 11th century, with later additions from the Vijayanagar period, the mandir's primary deity is Surya, the Sun, shown standing with his consorts Usha and Chaya, but it is the completeness of the Navagraha worship here that draws pilgrims specifically unable to make the full nine-mandir pilgrimage circuit through nearby villages like Thingalur, Vaitheeswaran Koil, and Alangudi. The founding legend, involving a sage cursed alongside the nine planets themselves, ties directly into why this specific site became their shared sanctuary.
The present mandir structure was built during the reign of the Chola king Kulottunga I around 1100 CE, with later architectural contributions from the Vijayanagar period. It stands as one of the most historically significant Navagraha sites in the wider Kumbakonam mandir region.
Built in Dravidian style with a five-tiered gopuram, the mandir is enclosed by a granite wall and, uniquely, contains individual shrines for all nine Navagraha deities within the same complex — the only mandir in the region built this way.
According to legend, Sage Kalava suffered from leprosy and prayed to the Navagrahas for a cure, which they granted. Brahma, angered that the planets had exceeded their authority by altering someone's destiny, cursed all nine to suffer leprosy themselves and cast them down to this site. They in turn prayed to Shiva, who appeared and granted that this place would belong to them permanently, to be worshipped here by devotees ever after.
