One of the largest and most architecturally striking Divya Desams, dedicated to Vishnu as Aravamudan (also called Sarangapani), with a towering chariot-shaped shrine and a 12-tiered eastern gopuram among the tallest in the region.
The mandir has a long history of Chola-era patronage, with the main sanctum and much of the complex developed across the medieval Chola period, and later expansion — including the towering gopurams — added under the Vijayanagara and Nayak administrations that followed.
The sanctum itself is uniquely built in the shape of a chariot drawn by horses and elephants, a striking design element that sets Sarangapani apart even among the visually rich Divya Desams of the Kaveri delta. The eastern tower rises 12 storeys, a landmark visible across Kumbakonam.
The mandir is described in the Alvars' hymns as the site associated with Ubhaya Nachiyar worship — both Lakshmi manifestations — and the mandir is regarded as an Ubaya Pradhana Kshetram, where the goddess shrine holds significance comparable to the main sanctum, a distinction shared by only a few Divya Desams.
