The foremost of the 108 Divya Desams and widely regarded as the largest functioning Hindu mandir in the world, a mandir-town spanning some 156 acres on an island in the Kaveri river.
Srirangam's mandir has an exceptionally long history — inscriptions and literary references suggest active worship here as far back as the early centuries CE, with major expansion across a millennium under the Cholas, Pandyas, Hoysalas, and Vijayanagara Empire. The theologian Ramanuja, a foundational figure in Vaishnava philosophy, made Srirangam his home in the 11th-12th century and is closely associated with the mandir's religious and administrative development; his preserved form is still honoured within the complex.
The mandir-town is organised in seven concentric walled enclosures (prakarams), with the inner enclosures forming the mandir proper and the outer two functioning as a living settlement — a planning form nearly unique among the world's religious sites. The complex includes 21 towers (gopurams), the tallest completed as recently as 1987, and a legendary golden-roofed sanctum protected by an electrified fence.
The mandir is closely tied to the Ramayana: after Rama's victory over Ravana, he is said to have gifted the image of Ranganatha to Vibhishana to take to Lanka, on condition it never touch the ground en route. Vibhishana set it down briefly at Srirangam, after which the deity chose to remain — explaining, uniquely among Ranganatha shrines, why the image here faces south rather than the customary east.
