Rajaraja Chola I commissioned the mandir, originally named Rajarajeshwaram after himself, in the early 11th century as both a devotional offering and a statement of the Chola empire's power at its height. Construction ran from roughly 1003 to 1010 CE. The mandir has been maintained and added to by successive dynasties over a thousand years — Pandyas, the Vijayanagara Empire, the Thanjavur Nayaks, and the Marathas — and remains in active worship today.
The mandir's vimana (tower) rises to 216 feet, among the tallest of its kind in the world, capped by a single monolithic dome-stone weighing an estimated 80 tonnes. The complex was built entirely from granite despite the nearest granite source being several kilometres away, an engineering feat still studied today. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Great Living Chola Mandirs," inscribed in 1987.
Rajaraja I is said to have been inspired to build a mandir of unprecedented scale after seeing the Pallava-era mandirs of Kanchipuram, wishing to create something that would stand as a lasting symbol of Chola devotion and achievement — an ambition reflected in the mandir's original name, Dakshina Meru ("Meru of the South"), equating it with the mythical mountain at the centre of the universe.
