This shrine's history is closely bound to the much larger Kamakshi Amman Mandir complex, one of the most historically and religiously significant Shakti mandirs in Tamil Nadu, developed extensively across the Pallava and later periods.
A modest shrine set within the walls of the far larger Kamakshi Amman Mandir, its Dravidian style consistent with subsidiary shrines found within major South Indian mandir complexes.
The Varaha (boar) avatar, in which Vishnu lifted the earth goddess Bhudevi from the cosmic ocean on his tusks, is honoured here within the walls of a mandir otherwise dedicated principally to the Goddess — another instance, alongside the nearby Ekambareswarar shrine, of Kanchipuram's several Divya Desams coexisting within larger Shakti or Shaiva mandir complexes.
