Virupaksha's core shrine is believed to date to at least the 7th century CE in some form, making it far older than the Vijayanagara Empire that later made Hampi its capital in the 14th century. The mandir grew substantially under Vijayanagara patronage between the 14th and 16th centuries, becoming the empire's principal mandir, and — remarkably — survived the empire's catastrophic destruction in 1565 largely intact, remaining in continuous worship ever since even as the rest of Hampi fell into ruin around it.
The mandir's main gopuram rises roughly 50 metres over nine tiers, a landmark visible across the ruined city, in the distinctive Vijayanagara architectural style that blends Dravidian form with Deccan-influenced ornamentation. A pinhole camera effect in one chamber, projecting an inverted image of the gopuram onto an interior wall, is a celebrated architectural curiosity here.
Virupaksha is a form of Shiva associated with Pampa, a local river goddess later identified with Parvati — their marriage is central to the mandir's mythology and is ceremonially reenacted each year during a major mandir festival, tying the shrine to the older Pampa-kshetra traditions that predate the Vijayanagara city built around it.
