One of the larger and more prominent Ashtavinayak mandirs, closely associated with the Peshwa rulers of Maharashtra, near the confluence of the Mula, Mutha and Bhima rivers, honouring Ganesha as the reliever of worries.
The mandir has strong historical connections to the Peshwa dynasty, who were significant patrons of this site, and it stands among the more substantial and architecturally developed of the eight Ashtavinayak mandirs as a result of that sustained royal patronage.
The mandir hall features a black stone water fountain, and the complex includes three smaller subsidiary shrines dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu-Lakshmi, and Hanuman alongside the central Ganesha sanctum — an unusually multi-deity complex for an Ashtavinayak site.
Chintamani, meaning "wish-fulfilling gem," refers to a legend in which Ganesha retrieved a precious jewel from the greedy King Guna on behalf of Sage Kapila, who then gifted the gem to Ganesha in gratitude — Ganesha is said to have then chosen to remain at Theur, giving the mandir its name and its specific devotional focus on relieving worries and granting wishes.
