One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, worshipped here as Vaidyanath β "Lord of physicians" β one of the most significant Shiva pilgrimage sites in eastern India, and a highlight of the annual Kanwar Yatra.
Deoghar has a long-documented pilgrimage history in eastern India, developed and patronised across many centuries, with the mandir complex today comprising the main Vaidyanath shrine alongside numerous smaller connected mandirs within the same walled complex.
A mandir built in the Nagara style typical of eastern India, part of a larger walled complex (the Baidyanath Dham) containing over twenty subsidiary shrines around the central Jyotirlinga sanctum.
The Vaidyanath ("Lord of Healing") name ties this Jyotirlinga to legends of Shiva's healing power, and the site is central to the annual Kanwar Yatra, in which devotees carry sacred Ganga water on foot across long distances specifically to perform abhishekam here β one of the largest annual pilgrimage foot-marches in the world.
